Do you love the cool simplicity of the Mason jar? Trash Amps took the hipster-friendly drinking vessel and converted it from a glass container to a portable speaker and practice amp. The Mason Jar Speaker, which is marketed as an environmentally friendly alternative to typical plastic portable speakers, is comprised of glass, metal and wood.

Run by two friends, Trash Amps was created from the idea that “you can put music in anything.” The creative duo started by collecting and upcycling soda cans into loud portable speakers, before moving on to the sturdier Mason jar. The eco-friendly designs are part of their effort to cut down on the amount of plastics dumped in landfills and oceans.

Assembled by hand in Sunnyvale, California, the battery-powered Trash Amps speaker-jars cost $65, or $35 for the DIY kit. A 1.4W amplifier with a 2-inch full range driver is tucked beneath a birch plywood grille and an accompanying 3.5mm jack makes it easy to plug the speaker into your smartphone or laptop. Best of all, you can still use the speaker-amp to pack your lunch when you’re on-the-go.
