I was recently introduced to Eco Market – an online marketplace where you can buy (and sell) natural products. I spoke to founders Liam Patterson and Jason Dainter, and they told me that since they went into business together (while in their final year at university, no less) the site is now home to 1,500 sellers from around the world. Like Etsy, many of the sellers are one-man band businesses, and Eco Market cuts out the middleman between you and their products.

In the last couple of years, there’s been an explosion of talent in the ethical fashion world that has firmly dispelled the myth that great style and great ethics can’t go hand in hand. And, looking around Eco Market’s wonderful selection of beautiful and eco friendly bags my thoughts quickly turned to how will I choose just five?

Luckily, I have the stamina of an ox when it comes to browsing ethical fashion and I looked long and hard. Here are my picks of the perfect totes to carry you into the Spring/Summer season (even if the weather is still dragging its heels and remaining firmly in Winter).

1. Take Aim, Carry All Bag – A classic tote in a size large enough to carry your laptop. This bag is made from upcycled canvas in India and decorated in the UK using eco-friendly inks. Simple but stylish. A must have.

2. FIKAY Travel Bag – I want this bag. In between weekend trips away to the Seychelles (unlikely) and trips to the gym (more likely), this light-weight bag is strong and durable. It’s hand-made from a Cambodian cement bag – part of a growing trend in developing countries who have started to look at what valuable resources they have in their waste material. Inside, it has a wire frame to keep its shape and is lined with more recycled materials. And, pleasingly, there are plenty of pockets for organized packing. Buying one of these FIKAY travel bags ensures a fairly paid job, recycling of local waste materials and also the gift of a school bag to a child in Africa or Asia. Hello, good karma.

3. Sunshine Anywhere Tote – For a splash of color that will make you feel summer-y regardless of what the weather is doing, get yourself one of these brightly colored, handwoven bags. They are made from sustainable Agel fibers and woven in Indonesia through a project designed to keep cultural skills alive.

4. Organic, Fair Trade Tote – For a casual shopper with a strong sense of style, this organic, handmade tote is the one. Decorated with a handmade silkscreen print based on hand drawings and with colors inspired by Van Gogh, this bag is for the creatives. It boasts a pocket inside and is one of a limited edition run. So grab yours quick.

5. Anchor Jute Bag – Another jute, but this time with a little more detail for the nautical lovers – a trend that keeps on returning to the high street. This bag is a bit more edgy than the others, with grungy upcycled truck tire tube around the lip of the bag. The twisted straps are made from recycled cotton and the anchor is hand stitched from recycled suede. It’s a gorgeous bag stuffed with sustainable style.

Check out Eco Market for loads of options, no matter what your style or mood.
