From luxe Russian-doll skirts and voluminous shoulders in bold African fabrics to bright dresses embroidered and painted with almost cartoon-like characters, the collection was intended to be “playful, joyful,” an homage to some of Deola’s favorite designs

Amidst the Italian, French, and American powerhouses at New York Fashion Week earlier this month, an elegant show featuring two Nigerian design houses effortlessly blended African sensibilities with globally appealing aesthetics. Deola Sagoe, the namesake designer behind Deola, is neither a stranger to the bright lights of the runway nor international praise (she’s been lauded by André Leon Tally, Oprah Winfrey, Rachel Roy, and Will Smith, to name a few), but her presentation at Studio 4 in Midtown Manhattan was especially notable because of the side-by-side collaboration with Clan, a label started, conceptualized, and launched by her three daughters.
