Combine great elegance with artistic abilities, unique colors and an innovative approach to handbag design and you are on the verge of imagining Jess Rizzuti’s ecologically conscious and ethical autumn/winter 2013 collection.

To no surprise her creations in cork have been nominated as Best Green Handbag in the Independent Handbag Designer Awards sponsored by InStyle, an honor due to her careful selection of renewable resources and concepts of waste reduction. The designer uses eco-friendly water-based dyes that bring out the exquisite range of colors Jess Rizzuti creations are known for.

The designer reflects a deep appreciation for the planet not only in her collection, but also in her global contribution to sustainability. As a part of Care for Kenya and Glocal Connection, the designer indirectly empowers women to live eco-consciously. Both organizations create sources of employment for women in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, and focus on sustainable growth of food as well as natural remedies.

Exercising ethical practices has been a priority to the designer. Together with the global organizations, Jess Rizzuti created “a capsule collection of handbags made of Kenyan textiles and beadwork native to the region, sold to greater benefit their cause,” the designer stated. Her future plans involve collaboration with the women’s center to communicate with local women through skill and empowerment workshops. Through Glocal Connection, luxury products are made by indigenous people and their uniquely creative art forms. The women of Kem Ajachel in Guatemala produced custom hand-woven and embroidered textiles that were designed specifically for Jess Rizzuti’s New York tote bag “merging antiquity and modern living,” she described. A portion of the income will go directly towards the sustainability of Guatemala’s local communities.

As a child, the designer was keen on expressing herself through art, which later lead her to pursue a BFA in Textiles from the Rhode Island School of Design. Jess Rizzuti’s focus lies on Surface Pattern Design leading her to further perfect her hand for design at the renowned Fashion Institute of Technology, where she specialized in Handbag and Accessory Design.

In 2008, her first bag was manufactured and her business took off as she launched a first collection only a year later, competing against a vast number of prestigious handbag designers from all over the world. With her predilection for precision, the use of rich materials and glamorous designs, her signature handbags have been standing out from the crowd.

Her exclusive spring/summer as well as autumn/winter 2013 clutch collections were made from “wood cork to everyday polished leather satchels to embossed metallic crocodile clutches that always make a statement,” said the designer.
