Javier Goyeneche, founder of Madrid-based fashion label Ecoalf, has a problem with most of today’s so-called “upcycled” clothing. “Most fabrics only contain a very small percentage of recycled material—15 to 20 percent,” he grouses. Goyeneche decided to rely on his own devices, creating “active alliances” across the globe to manufacture textiles from a gamut of castoff materials, including decommissioned fishing nets, post-consumer plastic bottles, worn-out tires, and cotton waste. Even discarded coffee grinds have their purpose.
