“I never wanted to just do what I was expected to do. I wanted to do something that I was interested in, not what other people think I should be doing as an Iranian artist. There are so many things that the general public doesn’t know about Iran”.

In between the hills of New Paltz, New York a young Iranian artist, Zahra Nazari, 28, works on deconstructing the concept of what is expected from an Iranian artist. Zahra was born in Iran. She is a graduate student in the fine arts program at New Paltz University. In the artificial light of her studio her voluminous curly hair frame a perfectly symmetric nose and harmonious eyes. Her stunning beauty is nearly intimidating: “I don’t want to fit into the usual narrative of what an Iranian artist should do. I want to be seen as an international artist”.

Zahra works on cityscapes. Her paintings are a mix of architectural elements from different parts of the world. In her paintings one can see elements of Persian architecture together with parts of American cities. “The idea is that anyone can relate to the piece in a different way. Whether he is from Iran, the United States or another country, the viewer will be able to relate to a specific part of the painting finding a piece of his city or something that resembles to it” she said. Zahra is one of the many young artists from the region challenging her own identity and trying to overcome, through her work, the stereotypes attached to it.
