Escape from the Mundane with n0designs

I have always thought that angels were watching over me throughout my life. They have saved me during the dark times and have lifted me when I needed it.

For some, Instagram is a tool used for business, networking, communication, etc. But, for people like n0designs, it’s an outlet. A place to share personal creativity and intimacy, a kind of public photographic diary.

For the record, just give us a quick idea of how you got passionate about photography and are you a professional photographer?
Well, I was never really into photography seriously until I came across this little app called Instagram several years ago. I’m not a professional, but I’m passionate about it. It’s fun and an escape from the mundane, day-to-day regularity of life.

I assume that your images are self-portraits. Tell us how you manage that technically.
All of my portraits are self-portraits. It’s easier for me to create my vision with myself and what’s in my head, than to find a model and a location. It just seems like so much more work. I enjoy the editing process more so than the picture taking. I like to create a sense of ambiance with the lightning and the mood of the visual background. But, basically, I know what I want my shot to look like, so it’s easy for me to just click when the time is right!

There is a certain amount of Photoshop manipulation or maybe app filters… In either case, are you self-taught?
Yes, I am self-taught. All of my shots are taken and edited with my iPhone. I use several different apps for overlays and I use Mextures on every photo. The textures and tones it gives are like no other app out there.

Wings are a recurring theme of your pictures. And they’re often used in a ‘falling angel’ context. Would you elaborate a bit on that?
I love wings, angels and anything angelic. I have always thought that angels were watching over me throughout my life. They have saved me during the dark times and have lifted me when I needed it. The wings symbolize freedom and purity, as well as power. I try to convey that through my captions as well. If it’s a quote or a lyric, I like to create a feeling or evoke an emotion when someone sees my photo. I pull inspiration from the pains in my past and use my work as a reawakening of my true self.

Here and there you insert very small details of birds and butterflies… Is there a particular meaning to it?
I like to add little details to my shots, yes, like birds and butterflies. I just like to create a sense of continuity and make cohesive piece. Sometimes a piece can feel empty, so I try to add a little more until it’s to my liking.

There is a struggle, a certain level of suffering in your images; can we assume that this is your way of processing a personal struggle? Or is this just a purely aesthetic choice?
Instagram is my escape and my little creative outlet. Sometimes, when I’m feeling down, my pictures can be a little darker, so I might hide my face more. But, most of the time, I create according to what I’m feeling in that moment.

Your images are very intimate, yet you chose to make them available to the huge audience of IG. Do you regret it sometimes, or it has been mostly a positive experience? There is a strong inspiration by renaissance fresco and paintings in your images. Almost religious at times. Would you elaborate on that?
I have no regrets when I do something, because it’s always for a reason. I use my body to express what I was never able to with words. My images are very intimate, but I have embraced my love for myself and the feedback from the community has been wonderful.
