Grace at your Feet

Inspired by super sized divas, from great opera to style icon Grace Jones, shoe designer Cori Amenta fashions lurex and gazelle leather into fantastic creations for the feet. Amenta is devoted to materials and designs that balance both masculine and feminine energies to large footed women (size 39 / 9 US and up), helping them confidently put their best foot forward while making a stylish splash at the same time. Pull up to the bumper baby. Kinky boots indeed.

CBK: How and why did you become a shoe designer?
Cori Amenta: First of all, because I’m in love with fashion, you could say I am a fashion addict. I chose to design shoes because of a demand that was not being met… Being a fashion stylist, I found that women with large shoe sizes had fewer options, so I decided to realize a collection that affords these women the privilege of wearing a pair of beautiful and comfortable shoes, just like everyone else.

CBK: It seems like you experiment with some interesting materials. Do you have a favorite one to work with? Are their any materials you wouldn’t use on shoes?
CA: For sure, I love classical materials. I love using masculine materials and shapes, mixing them with a feminine style. This season lurex, suede and gazelle leather drove me crazy!!! Probably a material that I wouldn’t use is plastic, but I cannot say I won’t use it at all, because fashion is an attitude and it doesn’t always agree with your own personal taste.

CBK: Looking through some of your designs, the only consistency seems to be variety. Does this speak to your personality? Or is it more of a conscious decision?
CA: I could not design my personality, it is far too complicated! My designs come from a real everyday need. Women have so many things to do every single day… We need a ballerina flat for the morning, a lovely pump to go to work, a beautiful gazelle boot to go shopping and a glamour sandal for the evening when we need to feel sexy!

CBK: Your shoot appears to take inspiration from Grace Jones. Could you tell us a little bit about that?
CA: Grace Jones is my biggest inspiration. I see in her the image of perfect universal androgyny. She represents both the rock and the new classical, and she makes me feel like I was a little dreaming girl!

CBK: In my own experience with shoes, I usually go for classic, iconic looks that straddle the line between form and function. How would you describe your general philosophy on footwear?
CA: The gazelle boots were my first inspiration, everything came when I saw the great opera of Umberto Boccioni called “Forme uniche nella continuità dello spazio” for the first time. What caught my attention was the harmony and the aerodynamic proprieties of those beautiful shapes! Looking at it, you can see how the feet are in harmony and deeply perfect in the space.
