Lingerie Lounge

The thing is everyone’s an immigrant in this town, and the only way to stay warm is to huddle together once in a while.

There’s nothin’ in this world like a wild bordello beauty. She din’t speak French, but many of them don’t… ‘specially in this part of town. She hailed from the East, with eyes like some kinda crazy. Big beautiful stories written in those eyes, but what struck me the most was her smile. The sorta smile that shines through the mildew of a tired existence. You could tell she was happy once, maybe she still is. Maybe those eyes see the sky through the clouds so to speak.

In the end we’re all overcast, blown out like too much perfume in the room, masking the sweat stained sheets. But she is the sun, a golden string on a broken harp. It’s an unspoken romance when she closes her eyes. She may not love me, but that doesn’t matter. When we’re together we hold to each other like it’s the last time, like it’s life and death. Quivering legs shake the very foundation of my own meaninglessness.

When it’s over she doesn’t watch me get dressed. She lies there in the fetal position with her back to me humming some little lullaby she prolly picked up from where she came from. Prolly somethin’ her mother used to put her to bed with. I like to think she’s sad I’m leavin’, that she sits by the piano downstairs, eyes vacant, missing me as much as I do her.

Her spine stares at me indifferent. I’ll sit down and have a cigarette before I go. One for the road, so to speak. Counting all the brushes and bottles by the mirror. Thinkin’ about the cold waitin’ around the corner. The thing is everyone’s an immigrant in this town, and the only way to stay warm is to huddle together once in a while. As I open the door I stop for minute. I think I’ll tell her I’ll see her next week, not to worry. I slip silently into the hallway; she knows I’ll be back anyway.
