Biggie, Jay-Z, or Nas?

For a second, try to imagine two snot-nosed, bib-dribbling toddlers engaging in a debate on 4th century literature.

From shell-tops and sweat suits to baggy jeans and Nike’s to skinny pants and backpacks, it is evident that the state of hip hop is forever evolving. Long after the East Coast/West Coast feuds and the Nas versus Jay-Z era, one question will always remain, who is the best?

If you were to ask one of the many drones of today’s generation, names like Lil’ Wayne, Drake, and even Rick Ross are bound to come flying out of their bubblegum loving faces. But what does it mean to be “the best”?

Most would consider record sales, net worth, or sheer popularity for the answer. Some simply label their favorite rapper as the best, but it just doesn’t work that way. For a second, try to imagine two snot-nosed, bib-dribbling toddlers engaging in a debate on 4th century literature. This is the equivalent to any and everyone who has never written a rhyme/rap/flow/verse/hook/song arguing until they are blue in the face over who the best may or may not be. The only ones who will ever have the luxury of knowing the answer to this ancient mystery would be rappers themselves, as it takes one to know one.

For those of you who’ve spent hours on end in barber shop seats having the dreaded “Biggie versus Tupac” conversation, let me help you out right now. Apples and Oranges! As for the rest, well just stop and ask yourself, does this guy even care to be the best? That’s right, if you wanna be elected, you gotta run first. Nowadays, up and coming rappers will sing, dance, and pop their pussies for the real niggaz (the record labels) in hopes that they’ll get the promotional backing it takes to be the “best”. There’s even YouTube videos on “how to write a hip hop song” if you’re interested.

For those of you who took blinders when God was giving out eyelids: what we once knew as Hip Hop has now been replaced with something I like to call Hip Pop. Pick a demographic and Sell! Sell! Sell! So who’s the best rapper? I can’t even remember the last time I seen someone trying to be.
