We set out to make a simple video celebrating the melting pot that is New York City by propositioning strangers to sing the universally known Christmas carol “Jingle Bells”. The idea was that people could be united, transcendent of social status, race, or religion by this classic holiday tune. As it turns out, ninety percent of New Yorkers don’t know the words to this song, which made our task a bit more difficult.

We started our journey on St. Marks, where our Italian intern Greta enticed the absurdist street performer at the Astor Place Cube to join in on the fun. He called himself Dr. Shower Cap, and maybe one day we’ll release the unedited footage of this mad man. Shower Cap, M.D., turned out to be the first of many New Yorkers claiming to not know the words to Jingle Bells, but give it an insanely weird try.

One interesting thing we learned: eccentric street performers and common folk crazy enough to sing for our camera flock to Greta like she’s handing out dollar bills. Oddly enough, when Andrew, the editor of this fine Jingle Bells video, and I went filming by ourselves, people ran from us like we were zombies of the faulty Mayan apocalypse. Maybe people have become jaded, but when two decently dressed guys with a tiny dog approach you asking, “Excuse me, do you know the song ‘Jingle Bells’?” and you run away, I shouldn’t have to yell, “We’re not homeless!” as we chase you down. Lucky for us, we found enough of you with the holiday cheer brave enough to half-ass “Jingle Bells” for our video.

So, Merry Christmas, Dr. Shower Cap, Toothless Jerry, Chris Brown look-a-like, overly sweaty guy, Summertime Santa, and all of our readers who don’t care that CBK took your favorite holiday to a really weird place.
