POV

Aloof to Violence. Why the Turkey struggle is ignored.

With over 90,000 deaths in the Syrian civil war, with Iran recently pledging 4000 troops to help Assad

Many wonder why foreign governments response to the violence in Istanbul has been moderate or non existent. With over 90,000 deaths in the Syrian civil war, with Iran recently pledging 4000 troops to help Assad and to keep the Hezbollah supply corridor open, with the US entering the conflict, Turkey, is the only NATO member in the area. Its strategical importance is dramatical. Hence any rushed policy decision by Erdogan towards the Syrian conflict could force the NATO alliance to engage in the war to protect Turkey. No western government wants to forcefully condemn the violence risking a rushed reaction from the Turkish PM who’s very touchy about criticism. In this very delicate historical moment, the brave Turkish people are being forgotten and sacrificed in the name of international politics.
