Two pigs had been squealing all night in the sty. They were talking to each other in the dark. In the morning, they had been brought from their native farm in the flats up to the hills. Wind blew through the metal doors. It was snowing outside. The oldest pig knew something was wrong. He had never left the flats before and he knew how humans disposed of pigs like him.

There was a hole in the rusty door and the youngest pig looked outside to the sky. He felt the freezing wind on his face. There was the smell of the snow in the air. The pigs couldn’t sleep. There was something that worried both of them.

“Why is it such a curse to be born a swine?” asked the younger of the two, looking at the snow falling outside of the concrete cabin. “Youth makes you say silly things,” said the older pig. “You haven’t seen anything yet.”

They were woken up early in the morning by voices outside of the cabin. The younger pig looked outside through the hole and saw that everything was white. The voices were loud and incomprehensible. There was a group of men outside of the door: they were laughing loudly and making jokes.

The younger pig saw his friend brought out in the snow. He heard him squealing louder than usual. He smelled blood in the snow. The men left and everything became quiet and dark again. He was scared and alone. He spent three hours thinking about his own death. When the men came again for the second time he knew he wasn’t going to make it. He started crying.

As they escorted him outside of the sty he suddenly realized he was walking on the blood of his friend: “The old man was right,” he thought. “I had no idea how really shitty it is to be a pig.”
