Haunting Season in Louisiana

What if I told you that this house was haunted? What if I told you that strange noises can be heard on quiet evenings?

words and images by Myron Ropp

We of South Louisiana are familiar with our ghosts, the area is rich with them. The native cultures. The Spanish. The French. The wonderful gathering of nationalities in New Orleans. When we see an older structure or house, our mind set is to already head out into the possibility of haunts, scares and “ibbie geebies”.

No one solicits at this house. Church organizations do not ascend the steps to knock on this door to give a flyer or pamphlet. Trick or treaters stay away. Even the mailman takes a huge gulp of courage to drop off mail here. Why? Look at it. It screams with dread. What if I told you that this house was haunted? What if I told you that strange noises can be heard on quiet evenings?

What if I told you that shadows are seen passing behind the sheers that cover its windows? Would you believe it? Of course, you would. Now. What if I told you that this house is occupied by one of the dearest ladies in the community. She is a retired schoolteacher. She volunteers at the local Goodwill Center. That she is constantly baking for local fundraisers and church events. Would you believe that? Perhaps you would. Perhaps you would not. It would depend on what story I told you.

My point is simply this. Never judge a ‘book by its cover’. The only way way to know truth is to knock on the door. Look. See. Listen. And most of all … feel. It is an opportunity to ‘knock on the door’. This message is brought to you by the ‘Old Farts Who Once Thought They Knew Everything, But Now Are Making Progress In Adjusting Their Attitudes ‘ Club.
