Pretend. It was what we called our play. Pretend was before we gained knowledge. Cowboys and Indians before learning of Wounded Knee. War and soldiers before The Third Reich. Pretend was fun and delightful. Innocent. Want to play … pretend?

Gwen was on one side of the massive door. Billy Ray on the other. ‘You let me in Billy Ray’. His muted answer came forth ‘Oh Gwen the Wicked. Your magic has no power here’. Gwen waved her ruler … which in her eyes, was plainly a wand. Nothing. She reached down and an in grabbing a handful of dirt … cast the magic dust against the door. Nothing. Sticking the twelve-inch ruler under her arm, she placed both hands upon the door and cried forth. ‘Spirit of wind and water pure. Open this door … your power sure’. NOTHING. Dang. Then … it came to her … ‘William of Ray … thou must be famished … open the door so I may present to you, this offering of surrender. THIN MINT Girl Scout Cookies. Only three left in this box’. Suddenly she heard the deadbolt slide. The massive door creaked and Billy Ray’s smiling face came into her view. ‘Thin Mint’? Asked the knight who lived inside the little boy. ‘Yep’ replied the sorceress who lived inside the little girl. Gwen shared her Girl Scout Cookies … but was thinking ‘Oh Billy Ray … you are such a softie’.

Running toward their goal. … The Fortress of the Green Wizard. Gwen and Billy Ray stopped to catch their breath, and to survey what dangers lie ahead. The imposing structure was completely engulfed with thorns and branches. Overhead the two could see the circling dragons. Three of them. Alvin, Theodore and Simon (that was Billy Ray’s idea). William of Ray drew his great sword from its sheath (what looked like a yardstick from his belt) and began cutting a swatch of access towards the front of the castle.
Gwen said boldly ‘Billy Ray … can’t you kick that bohonkus into gear’? … but Billy Ray heard only ‘Oh William. My brave knight. I feel so safe when you proceed before me’. And towards the fortress they made their way. The dragons screaming their high-pitched alerts. Princess Gwendolyn raised her arms and clapped her hands. A huge bolt of energy emitted forth and upward. ‘Silence wretched creatures. Be gone’. Thus … it was so. The path was clear to the fortress front. Standing side by side they looked down and saw the yellow, printed warning of the Green Wizard. ‘No Trespassing’. Gwendolyn looked at William of Ray. Billy Ray looked at Gwen. Gwen spoke first. ‘I ain’t going in. My Daddy will raise a Royal Conniption’. Billy Ray agreed. ‘Mine too. He is still sore from us using his garden cart as a time machine’. The two turned and started walking back to their houses. ‘Whats ya wanna do now, Billy Ray’? ‘Hey. You think your Mom has any more boxes of those Girl Scout Cookies’?
