It all begins in garbage cans like this one at a street corner in the East Village in New York. This particular one filled up to capacity in a couple of hours the morning of a very hot day. People kept piling up the garbage and plastic started falling on the ground. Some of that plastic got smashed by cars, entered manholes and ended up in our waterways. The same happens on public beaches all around New York. Garbage cans overflow, or, worst, people just leave their garbage behind. Also a large part of the plastic collected just gets thrown into landfills and sits there till the sun and elements decompose it and chemicals start filtering inside the earth and often end up polluting the water table. In a few words, we are attacking the planet from 2 sides: land and water. The beach above, is far from the US. You may think that is comforting news, but it ain’t. Once plastic begins to float, it can go many thousands miles. The water surfaces of our planet are connected. So, try to make a small difference when you can. Crash the bottles before you dispose of them, it will help with the garbage overflow. Use aluminum bottles for your water. Clean up the mess after your picnics at the beach.
