Gird your closets, boys and girls because ModCloth has unveiled its first-ever private-label collection. The “Make the Cut: Premiere Collection,” which debuted today, comprises 10 original designs, seven of which were crowdsourced from the online retailer’s own customer base. A team headed by Susan Gregg Koger, the company’s co-founder and chief creative officer, fielded more than 1,900 submissions, 90 of which were then put to a vote on Facebook. Together with three of Koger’s own designs, the winning concepts sprang to life under the supervision of talents in and around Northern California, including a pattern-maker in Oakland, a fabric-cutter in San Francisco, and garment-finishers in the East Bay.

THE AYES HAVE IT
The winners, who will receive $500 and their names on the garment tags, represent a broad range of ages and professions, from high-school students to veteran costumers. ModCloth plans to make the competition a regular occurence.

“I am thrilled to see the first collection from our Make the Cut contest come to life, because it is the start of a larger program that will give aspiring designers the opportunity to jump-start their careers in fashion more than anything we’ve previously been able to do as a brand,” says Koger. “With our recent funding round backed by Norwest Venture Partners, I envision ModCloth being in an even better position to expand our work with emerging designers to get their items manufactured for the first time.”
Zooey Deschanel is going to be all over these like a mofo.
