Dancetize It!

The day that I saw Storyboard P dancing on a lovely summer evening in front of Barclay Center, my camera had no rest.

When you hear the word “dance”, there is a number of images that come to mind, but whatever mental pictures you are able to retrieve from your memory, it will still be far from what Storyboard P creates on stage using his body as a canvas, his face as a brush, and the music as endless palette of emotions.

His style, though very modern, echoed with ancient theater performance. Storyboard P personifies his stage name by “dancetizing” the music he dances to. He drew a dance portrait of each song that played during the forty-five minute performance by embodying the music through hectic moves and overwhelmingly creative facial expressions. His moves, at times sharp, fast, on the spot, quickly change to slow motion, Matrix-like bends and wicked splits. His body appears to be weightless as he jumps up high in the air unexpectedly, or lifts himself without any noticeable effort.

The complexity of his dance pieces made me wonder if the performance had been previously rehearsed, I saw pure improvisation. The day that I saw Storyboard P dancing on a lovely summer evening in front of Barclay Center, my camera had no rest. Time moves differently while you observe this artist having the music flow through his body, and turning the stage into a large sketch pad that he draws on with his movement.

Wrapped in his own presence, every second of the dance is invested into the “soundtrack” to the maximum. At times, watching him dance seemed voyeuristic, since observing this artist expressing his passion on stage felt like an intrusion of his unity with music and movement.

Stretching a bone like a ribbon,
Falling down without touching the floor,
Storyboard P dancing on my shadow,
Painting emotions all over my soul.

After breaking down completely,
He stitches himself together,
Using bits of amazement,
That fell from my eyes on the ground.
